{Wichita Family Portraits} Fall Portrait Attire Tips

People are starting to book their fall family portrait sessions, so I spent some time this afternoon on Target.com grabbing some inspiration.

(I have these little boy shorts for my son & did some "Mommy & Me" portraits this summer - seriously adorable!)

This one is a little more "formal" ... but how adorable would it be with father & son in ties? :)

Feel free to share, post, re-post & shop ... but be sure to call quickly ... session times/dates are limited!

{Personal} What to do with old digital camera(s)?

We photographers are a little bit like pack rats. We don't like to throw anything away. My wide angle lens that's broken beyond repair? Still got it. My first film camera (manual focus & settings)? It's sitting atop a shelf in my living room, looking cute. The boxes all of our lenses & cameras arrived in? If you'd go into my storage room, you'd find them stacked neatly together. The point is we just hate to throw anything out that relates to our cameras.

This is my very first digital camera. I got it in 2003 when I started my first newspaper job as a photojournalist. Man, that thing was a tank. It was HEAVY.

As technology advances & changes, these guys become obsolete quickly. But what to do with them? They have basically no value and I couldn't bring myself to chuck it into the trash (after all, I photographed some amazing assignments like the America 24/7 book on it! Ditto my amazing African Adventure in 2006 - you can see pix HERE).

When Salina, where I lived, announced an electronic recycling day this spring, I thanked my lucky stars. Cameras weren't listed, but there was a graphic of a camera on there, so I took it. Really, recycling it was better than throwing it away. Right?

I lined up, held my emotions in check and was not completely relieved when the worker said they'd take it. Secretly, I must be a hoarder because I'm not sure I really wanted to part with it, but it was time. The quality of the images on my new cameras far surpasses those of the one from 2003 ... so it was time. I will admit I did get a little teary, but I managed to not lose my composure and look like a complete sap in front of this 20-something guy who was muscling around a mountain of electronics.

If you have some old digital camera sitting around, gathering dust, check out your local city. Call either the Public Works department or the Department of Household/Hazardous Waste. They should be able to point you in the right direction!

{Announcements} Heartland Photography & rue21salina team up for Model Senior Sessions!

Following up from yesterday's blog post about the best time to have senior portraits taken in Salina, I wanted to make a BIG EXCITING announcement!

Heartland Photography has teamed up with rue21salina to offer model sessions. Right now, rue21 has their popular rueBUCKS going on (stop by the store to find out more). In addition to the rueBUCKS, they're handing out extra special savings cards worth $40 off your senior portraits (session must be booked by June 15 in order for the savings to apply).

In addition to that, when your session is taken between now & June 15, you will be a rue21salina model! .... wait? A model? Yeah, that's right! Bring your most awesome rue21 outfit to the session, rock it out, and your photo will appear in local instagram/facebook promotions for back to school.

There will also be a special VIP shopping night later in June ... so be sure to chat with me or stop by rue21salina!

{Senior Portraits} When is the best time to take Senior Portraits?

Summer is here & all anyone wants to do is lie around & spend the rest of the time at the pool. I get it. I do, too!

June is the month I strongly recommend taking care of senior pictures.

Why? The kids are out of school and there are fewer commitments of time. It's just a little slower pace of life. And believe me, when senior year starts, it will kick into high gear QUICKLY! Schedules will fill fast & all of a sudden your yearbook advisor will be sending urgent emails telling  you the deadline to have the senior pictures in the yearbook is 2 weeks away. That is the LAST time to think about senior pictures! I promise. Photographers are often busy with fall family portraits by the time school yearbook deadlines come up and it's unlikely you'll get a session scheduled (believe it or not, I have 3 family sessions already locked in for Fall 2015 .... I take a limited number of sessions during the fall and it's truly first come, first served!)

June is perfect because while the temps are warm, we often aren't completely dripping in sweat during our on-location shoots the way we are in July or August. Nothing cuts our session short faster than an uncomfortable subject.

Also ... I have some amazing things going on with rue21salina .... STAY TUNED TOMORROW FOR THAT BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!! :)

{Wichita Wedding Planning ; Tips & Tricks} Do I need a Wedding Planner, Part 1

The Wichita Bridal & Pro Expo starts TOMORROW. How excited is everyone??!?!?!? :) Be sure you cruise on over to Ryan's blog post about preparing to go to the Bridal Expo HERE. We'll be in the booth with Janessa, one of our 2014 brides who can give you the scoop about how Heartland Photography photographed her wedding at Abode.

For awhile, I've been wanting to write a blog post about wedding planners/coordinators. I emailed a few of my favorite clients for their feedback, and they replied with novellas. So instead of one big blog post, I've decided to break it up into several posts. Today will be the first installment. :)

Wedding planner. Some people in KS think "I don't need a wedding planner/coordinator, I have a mom/sister/friends who will help take care of everything." .... What would you say to a mom or bride who has this attitude? What does a wedding planner do for them?

Toni is the mother of Megan … and she had this to say:

"As the mother of the bride, having a wedding planner provided me the opportunity to enjoy my daughter's wedding day knowing that all the little details my daughter had worked so hard to plan were being taken care of.  I was there to enjoy seeing the bride dress, get her hair and make up done, spend that special time together before during and after the ceremony.

Some brides may think this a place to save some money or cut expenses, but do you really want your family and friends working during your big event rather than spending the time with the bride and the rest of the wedding party?

I've had two daughters plan their weddings in KS while they were living out of state.  The oldest did not want to hire a wedding planner, I told the youngest if she didn't hire a wedding planner she should just plan to elope.  I was not handling another wedding without the help of a planner!  Fortunately the youngest opted for a wedding planner and it was an amazing experience for me as the mother of the bride!"

Toni / mother of Megan, about Jubilations.

Janessa, who will be in our booth this weekend has the following to say:

"I am an organized person. As an engineer I am very detail and logistics-oriented. I also have a reasonably artistic/creative streak. I always figured I would plan my own wedding, and that I would be proud to say when it went smoothly that I did it all myself.

"When my best friend got married, she did all the planning herself, and one of her husband’s cousins coordinated logistics on the day of. Her wedding turned out great, but I realized that I didn’t have anyone that I really trusted to hand the whole production over to on the day of. Most of my friends are men, and all of my cousins are too. I wanted the people I trusted enough to take on those responsibilities (my mom, sister, and closest friends) to be relaxing and enjoying the day with me and not rushing around haggling with vendors. Also, I was ABSOULTELY not coordinating my own day. Everyone told me that the day would fly by and be a whirlwind and I wanted to be able to relax and take as much of it in as I could (P.S. everyone was right, the day is a COMPLETE whirlwind).

"I originally intended to hire Faith (based on a recommendation from my wonderful photographer) only for day-of coordination. I would do the planning and she and her staff would show up on the day of and wrangle all the monkeys so all myself, my groom, and my family had to do was show up. No matter who you are, having a day-of coordinator is invaluable to your experience and that of your family and friends. There is a lot of responsibility and stress involved in making sure everything and everyone is in the right place on that day. There are already enough challenges for the bride and her entourage on this emotional day.

Do yourself a favor, and leave the logistics to a pro. They have done this so many times that they are prepared for anything (Faith had to glue/sew parts of my bridesmaids’ jewelry back together on the fly just as we were getting ready for pictures).

There are so many details that go into a wedding. I had done lots of research, but throughout the planning process, Faith would routinely ask me questions about how I wanted things that I had never thought of before. No matter how organized you are, you can never anticipate all the details that an experienced planner has learned to handle through coordinating many events. Also, since they do this professionally, planners don’t take concerns or criticism personally. If something isn’t the way you want it, you can feel free to ask them to change it without worrying about hurting the feelings of your mom/sister/friend.

SUMMARY: The day of the wedding is hectic. Make sure you, your family, and your bridal party actually get to enjoy it by leaving the vendor wrangling to a pro…in the end, it really doesn’t cost that much (especially considering the planner can be invaluable in making sure the rest of your budget is used efficiently).

Janessa about Bel Amour Events

I'll show a few photos from the well-coordinated Not Wedding in Wichita, which was also at Abode and produced by Events by Ashley.

Gracious! I realized that for a lot of reasons, I never blogged the NotWedding shoot. I'll put that on my "to do" list for 2015. :)

Whew! Lots of info there! Stay tuned for future installments about wedding planners in Wichita.

{Editorial Shoot} - Bohemian Drive In Inspiration Shoot

AAAAHHHH!!!!!!! I cannot keep these photos under wraps for a millisecond longer! They are screaming to be shared with the blogosphere! So here we go.

Toward the end of June, I worked with some amazing wedding vendors to create an uber-fun editorial shoot.

At the time, my sister asked "What is the point of this?" .... the short answer is that this is F-U-N for us. We wedding people want to let loose every once in awhile, do something creative, fun and a bit out of the box. We wanted to select a dress, settings and accessories that might not be "traditional" but are highly visual. To give us a bit of creative license, and also to serve as an inspiration to brides and grooms out there .... to do what you want, even if it's unexpected. :)

Let's start with the location: The Kanopolis Drive In in Kanopolis, Kansas.

This is the BACK side of the movie screen. Actually, the wedding coordinator, Faith, who I was working with pointed this out to me as a possible location. It's fun to do these creative types of shoots where multiple people are coordinating creatively. It was AWESOME! :)

Next, let's talk about our amazing models, Toni and her boyfriend Andy. While not engaged or married (yet!), they were willing to don wedding attire and let us get our creative groove on. Having never met either before the shoot, we could not have hand-picked a better couple to model for this shoot. Toni and Andy are both carefree, and head-over-heels for one another.

The "Love" sign. Let's talk about this. The paper products are created by Gretchen at P.ink Creative. I'll share more of her fabulous work in a bit.

I started with the location: the drive in. And then immediately enlisted the help of my friend and uber-awesome wedding coordinator, Faith from Bel Amour Events.

Faith is creative, energetic and loves organization and lists more than I do. A woman after my own heart. :) She came up with the idea that the shoot would be a bit bohemian. I threw loose the reigns and let her run with it. Faith brought at least half a dozen headbands to the shoot for us to play with, and almost as many earring options.

The lesson to take away from this: pearls are beautiful (especially if they're your grandmother's!), but not an essential wedding item. If you want to wear big, bold earrings, DO IT! Tiaras and crystals are NOT required for bridal headgear. An awesome patterned headband that goes with your color/theme can be just as cool ... and more uniquely you!

Gosh I love this photo!

Oh! This would be the time to tell you Toni is modeling a stunning dress from Simplistic Bride in Derby. Diane and her staff are fabulous!

At this time, I want to insert a tiny tip: a groom is not REQUIRED to wear a black tux. If your personality is a linen suit or even a different colored suit, GO FOR IT! Seriously, don't feel required to go with the black tux. Doesn't Andy look awesome? We dig his look!

I gave this one a vintage treatment. It almost reminds me of a tin type photo.

Also, I want to be sure to mention that Toni's hair and makeup were done by Amber at Thiessen-Elise Salon.

Let's take a short break from our hottie models to show you some more killer details! Gretchen TOTALLY knocked these table settings and menus out of the park. The menus are wrapped in leather with lace. LOVE them!

The cupcakes are not only cute, but they are tasty. :) Alissa at Cups & Cookies did the baking (her website is still under construction, so be patient with that link, please!)/

I didn't have too many concrete ideas about this shoot other than the location. And the fact that I wanted rock candy. Tags by Gretchen.

(Editor's note: you'll notice we have some 'collaged' detail shots here ... Mike and I are toying around with how we are going to format blog posts ... in a way that will involve more photos ... so leave a comment if you love this format or hate it! Inquiring minds want to know!)

We opted to have a more funky ring for this shoot. Toni actually brought it to the table; it felt more "Bohemian" to us.

Faith has seriously done a million things in her life. Not only is she an insanely talented coordinator, other wedding experience includes working as a hairstylist and as a floral assistant. As is evident by her handiwork in creating the bouquet.

One note to add here. On the bouquet, we added a big jewel. It's actually a necklace we were toying with and just loved. If you had a special family necklace/broach or even a cameo, it would be a fabulous addition to your flowers. You just want to be sure your florist anchors it onto the bouquet ... while they're lovely, they can sometimes take a beating on the wedding day because they're handled A_LOT.

More great styling. The head table name was all Faith. Since we were shooting at a Drive In, she wanted it to tie into the movies. Great choice! :)

In addition to a "sweetheart table," we set up a dessert/champagne area. Even though I was at the Drive In, I didn't want to over-use the screen. Ya know?

Smoldering shot of Toni. For reals. Rawr.

A little fun here. Some screen action, and of course, the concession stand. :)

Another lovely bridal. If I were to name this one, it'd be "stranded at the Drive In" ... but check out the look in Toni's eyes ... strong.

Sometimes, I have an idea of a photo I want to take before starting a shoot. Other times, I fall into these happy accidents by just going with the flow. This photo is a perfect example of a "going with the flow" moment. I might have actually screamed a bit when I saw them walk in front of the screen on the way somewhere ... and wanted to play with their silhouettes on the lit-up screen. To the left of the frame is the decor from the sweetheart table.

PHEW! What a monster blog post. I was able to share 25+ photos .... I've waited so long to share these because they will be published somewhere very special in a few short days. Stay tuned to find out where! :)

Coordinating Colors

Let's talk about wardrobe for family portraits.

WIth a full slate of portraits coming up, it's a very relevant question.

Some people like to go all black, all white or all gray. That's a very classic look, and also pretty quick and easy to do.

I often tell people if they have a few colors that they look good in and want to do a combo of them .... that's always fun. Sometimes you might have everything you need right in your own closet. This photo of Amy and Matt's family is an excellent example of a beautiful color palate. Their oldest has pink and brown in her shirt, and everyone else has shades of those colors in their attire.

Mike recently took a family photo of my extended family (which I'll share in a week or so...). I knew I didn't want to go all black or all white. I started with blue, because virtually everyone in my family looks good in blue. Then I chose brown as our combo color.

I next went to www.polyvore.com. You can go in and select a color, and then search for specific clothing items that fall within that color/clothing specification. A few of us had blue or brown shirts that would work, and one really cool feature of Polyvore is it tells you where the item of clothing is from. So you can search by a specific brand/store in your area. I used this, then went on a focused shopping expedition.

It really helped me to narrow down where to look for clothes. You can also search by a specific store.

Here are a few samples I pulled together from Polyvore.
