Carrie + Chip's Engagement

Last week, I headed down I-35 to Lindsborg to catch up with Carrie and Chip. They're getting married in a few short weeks, but we managed to squeeze in an engagement session while they're still engaged! :)

Since the couple lives in Lindsborg, we hit the streets, which led to adventures including (but not limited to) The McPherson County Old Mill Museum, a private backyard concert (oops!), a ginormous tire pile, and the Tropial Sno stand (my summer favorite!!!!).

At the end of our session, Chip looked at me and said "That wasn't so bad" to which I smiled. :) I wish I could just hug every couple and tell them how much FUN engagement sessions are! :)

Lori + Derek's Wedding Slideshow

Nearly three weeks ago, Mike and I trekked to a darling little town called Windom, Kansas (yeah, we'd never heard of it until we went their either, faithful blog readers!) for Lori and Derek's wedding.


Their wedding was full of beautiful details such as Kate Spade Shoes, a stunning Lazaro dress, breathtaking arrangements from Absolutely Flowers (side note, Lori and an army of ladies also made their OWN centerpieces! The mix of arrangements from the florist and their DIY — do it yourself — creations are so lovely), an antique truck, a cooked hog (YES, there was even an apple in the mouth!), and of course entertainment by the Gregg Woodall band.


Of course, I love a couple with a great sense of humor. When Mike and I were scouting locations, we found these interesting tools in this old barn. In a tongue-in-cheek manner, I said "I wonder if they're up for a new take on American Gothic?" ... and when we suggested it during their 2-hour romantic portrait session, they were all about it.

Of course, these who have a spectacular sense of humor, so you'll see this serious expression did NOT last long. :)

Shauna + James' Wedding Album Design Redux

Ok, ok, ok. I know what you're thinking: "Didn't you post Shauna and James' wedding album a few weeks ago?"

Yes, we did post it .... but as we were finishing our album updates, Shauna sent me a text, asking if we could bump up their stellar album. The answer is YES and YES!!!!! :)

Here's what I LOVE:

1. The awesome spread (above).

2. The double-truck on pages 4 & 5. This is one of my all-time favorite images, and with the extra pages we're able to make it BIG and beautiful!

3. The photo of Shauna's brother on page 47. Yes, that's him SPEWING beer on me during his keg stand. It's one of the most amusing memories of their wedding. :)

Erin + Shane's wedding slideshow

Two weeks ago we were in Lawrence for Erin and Shane's wedding. It was their idea to photograph near Potter Lake, a landmark on the KU campus. And since we were already on campus for their ceremony inside Danforth Chapel, it only made sense that we spend some time at the lake. They were so accommodating throughout the day; they even agreed to sit in the slightly damp grass for this dramatic portrait, easily my favorite from their day. Contest — Mothers Day

A lot of changes have happened for us at Heartland this year. With Mike embarking onto parenthood, we thought we'd celebrate by offering a Mother's Day contest.


Whether you're expecting ...


Are a new mom ...


Have kids a little older ...


Or even are a grandma ... we want to honor you!

So, here's the skinny on the contest:

Send us an e-mail about a mother. She can be your wife, mother or grandmother, your sister or friend. As long as she's a mother, you may enter them in our contest. We're journalists, so we want you to tell us the story of an inspirational mom you know. What makes her fantastic? Has she overcome any obstacles? What are the unique ways she embraces or defines motherhood?

You have one week to submit your entries.

1. Be sure to "tell us your story."
2. Include your name
3. Include the nominee's name
4. Tell us your relation/relationship to her
5. Your contact info (e-mail/phone number)
6. The nominee's contact info (e-mail/phone number)
7. If you'd like to include a photo or video as well, please feel free to do so. :)

Entry deadline is noon CST on May 8 (we'd also prefer if nominees live in Wichita, Salina or somewhere in between for ease of giving the winner a fabulous portrait session valued at $150).

We will announce the winner here on our blog on Mother's Day (May 10).
