WIth a full slate of portraits coming up, it's a very relevant question.

Some people like to go all black, all white or all gray. That's a very classic look, and also pretty quick and easy to do.

I often tell people if they have a few colors that they look good in and want to do a combo of them .... that's always fun. Sometimes you might have everything you need right in your own closet. This photo of Amy and Matt's family is an excellent example of a beautiful color palate. Their oldest has pink and brown in her shirt, and everyone else has shades of those colors in their attire.
Mike recently took a family photo of my extended family (which I'll share in a week or so...). I knew I didn't want to go all black or all white. I started with blue, because virtually everyone in my family looks good in blue. Then I chose brown as our combo color.
I next went to www.polyvore.com. You can go in and select a color, and then search for specific clothing items that fall within that color/clothing specification. A few of us had blue or brown shirts that would work, and one really cool feature of Polyvore is it tells you where the item of clothing is from. So you can search by a specific brand/store in your area. I used this, then went on a focused shopping expedition.
It really helped me to narrow down where to look for clothes. You can also search by a specific store.

Here are a few samples I pulled together from Polyvore.
